The Norte region borders with the north and east of Spain and has an Atlantic coastline to the west. It has a strategic geographic position facing the American and African continent. It is a region with a significant dimension in Europe, with an area of approximately 21,3 thousands km2, and a population of approximately 3,5 million inhabitants (thus representing 37,7% of the Portuguese population), growing at an yearly 0,1% rate. Density of Population reaches164 in./km2.

Business Location

Norte has important industrial sectors, traditionally linked to exportation: shoes, cork, furniture and metallurgy. Industries like automotive and electronic components have also developed. Exports to EUR 15 reach approximately 5500 MEcus, which represents about ¼ of the Region GDP. The main exporting industrial sectors are textiles, shoes, machinery and equipment which represent 73% of these exports value. More than 2/3 of exports to EUR 15 go to Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

The industrial structure of the region is based on SME’s, and their flexibility and involvement in the external trade, combined with the existence of a young and large workforce, are North’s main strenghts. The region is also well endowed with infrastructures such as technological centres, business centres and exhibition parks.
